jakarta-cityJakarta is a short name for the capital city of Indonesia. The city legally named as Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta (Special Capital Territory of Jakarta). Jakarta province governs by Governor Fauzi Bowo (2007-2012).

Jakarta was formerly known as Sunda Kelapa (397-1527), Jayakarta (1527-1619), Batavia (1619-1942) and Djakarta (1942-1972).  The province located on 6°16′0″S 106°48′0″E or on the northwest coast of Java and bordered by Banten Province on the west and West Java Province on the east and south. Jakarta has an area of 661.52 km2 (255.41 mile2) this made Jakarta as the twelfth-largest city in the world with population around 8.5 million people (2008).

Ragunan Zoo

Ragunan Zoo

ragunan-zooThe most visited tourism object in southern Jakarta is Kebun Binatang Ragunan (Ragunan Zoo), particularly on week end or public holiday crowded by thousands of people. Ragunan zoo was designed as an open zoo concept, which allowed visitor come closer to the animals. The zoo was also designed as a recreational park, which made the zoo named Ragunan Zoological Park. The Ragunan zoo is open everyday from 07.00 am - 05.00 pm.

National Museum

national-museumThe history of the museum started in 24 April 1778 when a group of Dutch scholar and intellectuals in Batavia founding an organization of arts & culture. The name of the organization is Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen. The organization aimed to promote and publish arts and culture research particularly in history, archeology and ethnography.

National Monument

National Monument (Monas)

monasIn Indonesia the national monument named Monas (Monumen Nasional) or Tugu (tower) Monas. Monas is located in central Jakarta, at the north of Lapangan Medan Merdeka. The Monas was built in President Soekarno era, start to build in August 1959 by architect Soedarsono and Frederich Silaban with Rooseno as a consultant until officially finished in 17 August 1961. Monas starts officially opened for public in 12 July 1975 by President Soeharto. Monas was built as symbolize of the fight for Indonesia’s independence. Monas square formerly named Lapangan Gambir, Lapangan Ikada, Lapangan Merdeka, Lapangan Monas and currently named Taman Monas and occupied 80 hectare area.
